Do you feel like Oliver Anthony that “It’s a damn shame what the world’s gotten to, for people like me, and people like you”? Mr. Anthony’s song Rich Men North of Richmond has topped the music charts. If you missed his heartfelt song, click here. But here’s what you need to know. What the “Rich Men” that Anthony is referring to do not want you to know, is that you can make a difference, and it starts at the local precinct level.
“It’s a damn shame what the world’s gotten to, for people like me, and people like you. Wish I could just wake up, and it not be true, but it is….Living in the new world with an old soul…These rich men north of Richmond“
Oliver Anthony
To make a difference, we need to gather together, so my husband, Mike Mentzel, and I organized a Chatham County Republican Party (CC GOP), District 1 Summer Cookout at the home of Dean & Debbie Burnette’s house. Mike is the Commission District 1 Chair of the CC GOP, and I am a CC GOP Precinct Chair of 1-06c. Remarkably, despite the heat, 42 people showed up to eat food, learn about the CC GOP and hear from District Attorney candidate Anthony Burton. I believe we had the turnout we did because people are “wishing they could just wake up, and it not be true” (Oliver Anthony) the direction our country has turned.
We had several goals for the meeting:
- Share a meal and informally meet fellow Republican neighbors
- Help folks learn more about the local CC GOP’s new leadership
- Help folks learn about local politics (maps, candidates, elected officials)
- Hear from Anthony Burton, a local candidate for District Attorney
- Provide each attendee with opportunities for involvement and making a difference locally
- Build the contact list for 1-6 precinct development.
After eating some excellent food, Mike made an introductory speech in which he presented an update and accomplishments related to the five goals set during the D1 precinct brainstorming session in June 2023.
Our Five Goals
- Communications
- Election Integrity
- Local Candidate Elections
- Precinct Education
- Precinct Development
Mike then introduced Anthony Burton. Anthony is a candidate for the position of District Attorney (DA). Anthony gave a speech outlining his passion for crime-fighting and qualifications for the job of DA, and he took questions. He was well received, and even though the election doesn’t take place until November 2024, it’s not too early to support Anthony.
“Lord knows they just want to have total control. Want to know what you think, wanna know what you do”
Oliver Anthony
In the final part of the evening, Mike reviewed opportunities where YOU can get involved and make a difference. You can make a difference. It starts at the local level. Here are local opportunities for YOU to make a difference.
